Wampum

Wampum jewelry holds a significant place in the history and culture of Indigenous peoples of the northeastern United States.

Traditionally made from the purple and white parts of the Quahog clam shell, wampum beads were used for ceremonial gifts, recording important treaties and stories, and even as a form of currency.

Today, wampum jewelry is crafted into beautiful pieces that honor this heritage.

Designs of white (wompampeage) and purple (suckauhock) beads are prized by the American Indian as a symbol of wealth, power, and are used to sanctify their wedding vow. After Dutch, English and French contact, the word “Wampum” was used for both the purple and white part of the shell in the form of tubular beads. “Wampum” became a medium of trade for 250 years (1609-1860) and was legal tender currency in many areas during this period.

At Newport Silver Co., we continue this long tradition by offering this beautiful Wampum- Quahaug Jewelry for you to wear and enjoy.

Spiritual meaning: power
